Academic Integrity free essay sample

This is my first time to get in touch with this new phrase: Academic integrity. To be honest, Students in China including me seldom acquire knowledge concerning subjects like Academic Integrity; so I have to admit that I only have faint sense of Academic Integrity, which is never cheating in examinations. I think it is partly caused by Chinese education system. When I was Child, the only understanding of integrity is to be an honest child or do not lie to your parents and teachers. When I grow up, clearly know that cheating is a really ad thing. Thus think, to some extent, these two rules are more like moral integrity but academic integrity. We can quote words or opinions of others freely and we do not know it is also a kind of plagiarism. Teachers only care about whether we finished our assignments regardless of the way how we complete them; even though we just copy part of article belonging to others. After I attended the academic integrity lecture on August 7th, I have had a ewe understanding of what is academic integrity. What is more, I have clear answers of three questions as following. The first question: what is the difference between quoting and citing? Quoting is a direct use of what you read and understand from authors articles, which is identical to the original or a narrow segment of the source. They must match the original source verbatim and must be attributed to the original author (Purdue Online Writing lab, 201 3), while people do not need to quote the original source when using citing and there is also no requirements to ad quotation marks however, which is required in quoting sentences. That means citing allows us to quote others own opinions, words, even references but not exact words via paraphrasing with the name of author and the year. The second question: do still require citations when I paraphrase? I thought the answer is no before I took part in this lecture. However, now the answer in my mind has totally changed, because the professor told us that intensive paraphrasing still belongs to plagiarism. Whenever people directly quote or paraphrase, these words and ideas are others not your own works. Therefore o still should use citations signifying the author and year; even you have paraphrased these sentences. The third question: Are we able to cut or paste information online into our papers? Before my answer is Yes, but now know this behavior is definitely Wrong. In China, you have freedom to download any references from the internet without any permission from owners; however, this kind of behavior is definitely banned and unlawful in North American. If you never present any reference to explain what the information is and where it is from, that is absolutely inaccurate. This is also plagiarism.
